OXFORD SAVATE Hosts Open Training Event:

Judging and Refereeing

Novice Competition

Friendly Bouts with other clubs

Competition Practice, hints and tips from experienced savateurs

Gradings up to Red Glove

Training

  • Learn to judge and referee. This is useful for people who want to learn to officiate, or who want to brush up their skills, or who want to understand what the judges are looking for. The latter is invaluable in improving your performance in competitions. People who wish to attend this (it's highly recommended!) MUST arrive by 10.10am. You will not be allowed to officiate unless you either attend this from the start or are qualified to do so by the GBSF already. It would help if you emailed your instructor or me to register your interest in this.

  • Novice competition. Open to anyone who has been in two or fewer *martial arts* contests (not just Savate). You will weigh in and be paired against an appropriate savateur from another club of a similar weight and experience. At the end of your bout a winner will not be delared unless you both request it. At the end the officials will give you both pointers on what you need to change to increase your scores and improve your fighting. You will get opinions from very experienced Savateurs and other club instructors, which you should find very useful indeed. You MUST arrive by 11am to enter. Everyone is guaranteed at least one fight. It would help a lot if you email your instructor or me asap to register your interest, with your age and rough weight.

  • Judges and referees will score the novice competition. If you are a new judge you will be led and helped by an experienced official and you will discuss your decisions after the fight so that you can improve. All novice fights will be very carefully controlled, usually with an experienced referee.

  • Once the novices have fought the floor will open to anyone else who want friendly fights with people from other clubs in advance of the 1st March competition, and new referees will get the chance to practice on experienced fighters. Each new ref will be supported by an experienced mentor, as it can be daunting when you first start. Again if you are interested in friendly fights please let us know.

  •  Depending on how many people there are in attendance there may be open training to prepare for the real competition on 1st March.

  • At around 2pm gradings will start. If you wish you grade you MUST email your instructor or me directly to request a grading. We will hold blue, green and red glove grades provided there is enough interest.

  • There is no restriction on how much of this you do - you are welcome to "compete" as a novice, enter the friendly fights, judge, referee and grade. Depending on the number of people we will finish between 2 and 4pm (tbc) and everyone who wants to will be escorted to a nearby drinking establishment by members of Oxford Savate!

Venue: Wychwood School Hall

Wychwood School is an independant girls' school situated close to Oxford town centre, on Banbury road which leads north from Oxford to the ring road, past Summertown. It is a boarding school and it is therefore important that we do not disrupt the normal running of the school. There will be signs to the competition so please DO NOT ring the school directly or ring on their bell.

Buses between central Oxford and Summertown via Banbury Road include the Oxford Bus Company 2, 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D, RH Transport Services 25 and 25A and Stagecoach 7, 7A, 7B, 17, 27A, 27B and 27C. Any of these buses will run close to the venue.

The address is 74 Banbury Road, Oxford OX2 6JR map. There is some parking on Cardwell Road and Northmoor Road. Public transport is recommended however. If you need help planning your travel, email me.
