Brief Introduction to Savate

Savate is an efficient, effective and elegant style of kickboxing. It originated in France, and is also known as "Boxe Française". It is fought with boxing gloves and shoes, and in Oxford we fight "assaut", or semi-contact, meaning that a fighter should have sufficient control that he can pull a kick in mid-air should the referee stop the bout for any reason. It is also possible for advanced Savateurs or Savateuses to fight Savate "combat", which is full contact.

The punches of Savate follow English Boxing rules. There are a wide range of allowed kicks. Only punches and kicks that connect with the shoe are allowed, no knee or elbow strikes. Details of the history and techniques can be found at www.savate-uk.com

Savate is a fighting sport and the training focuses on improving kicking and punching techniques, ringcraft and learning defences and counterattacks.

It is possible to attend gradings, to measure your progress, but deciding not to do so will not affect your opportunities to learn and improve. A guide to grades can be found here

Oxford Savate is a member of the Great Britain Savate Federation.
