OXFORD SAVATE Hosts First GBSF Championship League Event of 2008

GBSF League Event 1: Sunday March 9th 2008: General Information

This will be a competition following normal Savate rules. For clarification of the rules, or any further information please call Laura Gilbert on 07866 743849 or email instructor@oxfordsavate.co.uk.

The cost will be £8 to compete and £5 to spectate, paid at the door.

Weigh-ins will be 10.10-10.40am, with fights starting after 11am. Fights will continue until 5pm and the competition will close by 6pm.

Note that parking is limited, so please seriously consider public transport. Oxford traffic is unreliable  so please leave plenty of time to get here.

It might not be easy to buy food and water nearby so it's recommended you bring your own. It's important to stay well hydrated throughout and keep your blood sugar up, it's a long day.

There are plenty of Bed and Breakfast establishments down Abingdon Road near the venue.

Important Details for Competitors

1) The hall opens at 10am. Weigh-ins are 10.10am-10.40am and competitors MUST weigh-in in this time period.

2) You MUST come with the correct kit. This consists of either an integrale or other sports clothing in a decent state of repair. Baggy clothes are dangerous to your opponent (feet can get caught in them and will not be allowed. No competitor will be permitted to fight without a suitable GUM SHIELD and boxing gloves of the appropriate weight (see bottom), groin protection is required for men, and

3) Shoes MUST be worn. Permitted shoes include savate boots, boxing boots, squash shoes and limited other types of sporting shoe. Other shoes can be worn provided that they are in a decent condition and that they have no buckles, "sharp" edges or large ridges. Fighting shoes will be CHECKED at weigh-ins and shoes considered dangerous will be banned. If in doubt bring more than one pair. Laces must be taped up with masking tape before a bout for safety.

4) No jewellery is permitted excepting those piercings etc. which CANNOT be removed, and these must be well and securely covered in tape. Competitors entering wearing jewellery in this fashion do so at their own risk, and the fight will be stopped if the jewellery does not remain safely covered throughout.

5) To enter you must be physically and medically fit to compete. Entry is taken as an assurance of your fitness.

6) You must either hold a GBSF licence or be prepared to buy one on the day (£16 for a years licence) by way of indemnity cover. If you have a licence book, it would be helpful to bring it.

7) Contact will be very strictly controlled. If you are not prepared to compete with a level of contact appropriate to Savate assaut, don't bother coming.

Important Details for Officials

1) Referees are expected to be properly attired in black trousers (can be sports trousers if necessary), white shirt and ideally bowtie (which may be borrowed on the day).

Venue: South Oxford Community Centre

"South Oxford Community Centre is situated at the end of Lake Street, off the Abingdon Road in Oxford, about one mile south of the city centre. It is within easy cycling and walking distance from the centre of town, and plenty of buses pass close by.

Please note that parking at the Centre is on the street and is very limited - we therefore encourage visitors to walk, cycle, or use public transport. There are cycle racks at the side of the building. If you do come by car, please show consideration for local residents when you park.

Here's a map of our immediate location. Here's a map showing our location in Oxford.

ON FOOT/BIKE from town centre:

Starting from Carfax, head south down St Aldates, passing the police station and going over Folly bridge onto the Abingdon Road. You will eventually pass Hinksey Park on your right, and will see a post box close to the end of Lake Street. Turn right down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right.

BY BUS:

There are frequent buses running up and down the Abingdon Road, stopping near the end of Lake Street. Going north (towards the centre of town) the stop is just past a post box, next to Hinksey Park. Going south, the stop is shortly after the entrance to the Four Pillars Hotel, just past the end of Lake Street. Ask the driver for "Lake Street". You can catch the following buses:

Most pick up in the centre of town at St Aldates, a short distance past the Town Hall. Please note that the Park and Ride bus does not stop on the Abingdon Road.

BY CAR:

from East Oxford/Cowley: Go over Donnington Bridge and turn right at the junction with the Abingdon Road. Head towards the centre of town for about half a mile. Lake Street is on the left hand side, shortly after the Berkshire Arms pub on the left and the Four Pillars Hotel on the right. Turn down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right.

from the A34, north or south: Leave the A34 at the Hinksey Hill interchange, signposted A423 and "Scout Camp". This is the first main Oxford turn-off if you are coming from the South, and the third if you are coming from the north. Take the left exit at the roundabout at the end of the slip-road and follow a short section of dual carriageway. At the next roundabout, turn left towards the centre of Oxford.

You will pass the Park and Ride on the left and slightly further on, a junction with Donnington Bridge/Weirs Lane on your right. Don't turn off - continue on the main road for another half a mile. Lake Street is on the left hand side, shortly after the Berkshire Arms pub on the left and the Four Pillars Hotel on the right. Turn down Lake Street. The Community Centre is at the end of the street, on the right. "
